Sen. (senator for your state),

The House of Representatives has passed the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (S-1383), which would create the requirement for anyone registering to vote (or updating their current registration) to provide documentary proof of citizenship in person at their local election office.

While i understand that only American citizens should be able to vote in federal elections, there have been virtually no instances of non-citizens doing so. Meanwhile, the requirements of this bill would make it difficult (if not impossible) for millions of legitimate citizens to cast ballots.

The bill currently lacks the 60 votes needed to enable to bill to be acted on. Some Republicans - at the urging of President Trump - have proposed changing the Senate rules to eliminate the 60-vote requirement for this bill. That would require only 50 votes, and allow the bill to pass with those same 50 votes.

As your constituent, I am urging you to reject this action, and to urge other senators to do the same.
