Sample letter to your senator
More than half a million people live in the District of Columbia. As they are citizens of the United States, there is no justification to deny them the representation in our government that all other U.S. citizens have. There also is no justification in preventing D.C. residents from enacting local laws that don't require Congressional oversight.
Creating a new state from the residential areas would fix this injustice.
As your constituent, I am requesting that you give your full support to the Washington, D.C. Admission Act or any similar bill in the future.
What if the bill is blocked
If this bill is blocked by a filibuster in the Senate, it would require the votes of 60 Senators to allow it to be voted on.
It takes only a majority though to change the Senate rules to end the filibuster. So you also can write to your senator requesting they take action to end the filibuster (either on this issue or in general).
