Sample letter to your representatives in Congress
As your constituent, I am asking you to enact a law to increase the minimum wage so that someone working 40 hours in a week would not need public assistance to afford housing, food, and health care. This minimum wage should include workers who now earn a large part of the income from tips.
This would help not only the 16 million Americans who earn less than that, but most Americans, since less would need to be spent on assistance programs such as SNAP, Medicaid, and the Earned Income Tax Credit - which are paid for with public tax dollars.
Please be aware that studies conducted in the past 15 years overwhelmingly show that increases in the minimum wage do not cause significant loss of jobs or price increases.
